Local Lawmakers Discuss Public Works Bills Impact

Our area legislators were in Mankato today... recapping the last legislative session and its impact on our region, particularly the Civic center.Representative Terry Morrow, Representative Kathy Brynert and Senator Kathy Sharen met with Greater Mankato Growth and Southern Minnesota Advocates. One of the biggest areas for the business leaders were the public works projects... including Mankato's Civic Center which was vetoed out of the bill by Governor Tim Pawlenty.Representative Terry Morrow says, "at the same time I know the Civic Center is seen by these groups as being an economic driver and adding to the quality of life in the greater Mankato area."Greater Mankato Growth was one of the organizations hosting the recap.Their President says the civic center has a three year history of support from lawmakers... so talks on expansion wouldn't have to start from the ground up.Greater Mankato Growth President Jonathan Zierdt says, "starts with wow this has been legislatively approved for three years in a row the community swell for it is growing and growing can we finally get through the final stage and get approval on a final bill."Other areas identified as a priority by business leaders were capital investment and the development of a rapid response team.
