Blue Earth County Supplying Sandbags For Residents

While the flooding isn't here yet, it is expected along the Minnesota River come the middle of next week.News 12's Caroline Rowland has more on how the county is preparing... and how you should too.Residents watch as ice floats down the Minnesota River.The rapid rise is from melting snow and rains.That also has emergency management officials watching the river as well.Mike Maurer, Emergency Management Director for Blue Earth County Says, "We're maintaining and monitoring river rise increase rates, we're looking to help other counties as the flood needs arise."And to help residents, the county is supplying sandbags.23 thousand bags are available... however, the county won't provide the sand.You can get the bags through appointment by calling the county.If you're in need of sand the county says Southern Minnesota Construction is able to supply it.And if you're home is at risk... Emergency management director Mike Mauer offers these suggestions...Mike Maurer, Emergency Management Director for Blue Earth County Says, "Monitor water levels if you're in low lying areas, prepare ahead of time, sometimes the water rises at rates that are unpredictable."Be especially careful near low bridges, where water will flow over.Low areas near Judson have seen flooding in the past. In fact, it's closed the bridge. That shouldn't be the case this year.Al Forsberg, Blue Earth County Public Works director, "The one at Judson used to close, but we have a new bridge there. The bridge is higher longer and the approaches have changed."Another area of concern along the river is ice and debris jams.Authorities want the public to watch for them.. as they check out the icy spectacle.In Blue Earth County, Caroline Rowland, News 12.
